Kg Pengkalan Gate in Lahat, Perak, Peninsular Malaysia, is still underdeveloped.
Although it has been around for more than 200 years, and part of the Ipoh bandaraya, the tradisional village is still lacking in modern basic facilities.
Compared to more developed village of Kampung Pengkalan Pegoh next door, Kg Pengkalan Gate is undoubtly has less of everything.
Jalan Pasir Puteh linking the popular Station 18 to Lahat town, passing next to Kg Pengkalan Gate, and the road is busy with vehicles from morning to night.
Sadly, there is no public transport linking this stretch of road. I repeat PUBLIC TRANSPORT IS NOT AVAILABLE AT KG PENGKALAN GATE AND BANDAR LAHAT BARU.
Buses from Ipoh city does pass through Kg Pengkalan Pegoh, but it fail to come through Kg Pengkalan Gate.
Many people from this village, Lahat baru town, Taman Pasir Wang, RPT Pengkalan Gate Tambahan, Gerbang Johan Delima and the nearby areas had to rely on own transport to go to Tesco, Aeon, Pasabina and Menglembu.
The villagers are not rich people, so many cannot afford cars, thus bicycle and motorcycles are one of the main transport system.
What happened when the our vehicles fail to function or broke down? How to go to these places to buy our daily groceries? How to go to the nearby Klinik 1Malaysia in Station 18? Those rich people has no problem as they had many cars, but how about the poor?
It is even worst for mother-to-be or pregnant wife. The nearest Klinik Mengandung is in Kg Pengkalan Pegoh, about 4km away. With the heavy traffic flow surrounding the Pegoh area and the increased population of Bandar Lahat Baru, there is a need for such clinics to be set up in the new township.
And please ask the Pos Malaysia mobile van to be based in Bandar Lahat Baru at least once a week!.
Being based in the old Lahat town is unpractical as most people are staying near the new township.
More township is being planned, so drastic more has to be done.
Worst...among the worst was the lack of primary school (sekolah kebangsaan) at Bandar Lahat Baru.
Primary school children had to travel to Pengkalan Pegoh or Pinji Mewah to go to school.
With the heavy traffic flow in the morning and noon, school-going children had to sacrifice their safety to school.
Pity those mothers whom had to carry their children in motorbike to school.
Sending by school van is out of the question for some people, as the cost if heavy for those less income families.
So, it is time for Bandar Lahat Baru gets its primary school.
However, salute to the government as it had already built secondary school (sekolah menengah) at Bandar Lahat Baru and a mosque nearby.
In the morning, many children will cycle to this school. Not only it is the cheapest way of transport and not too far from their houses.
The children also get some form of fitness exercise in the early morning....by cycling to school.
However, the lack of street light is a big worry for many parents.
The big tarred road linking Jalan Pasir Puteh to RPT Pengkalan Gate Tambahan still has no street light in some portion of the road.
Some ot the lights available are 'donation' from the factories nearby - Gallant, Ban Lian and Iskrameco.
Proper street lighting is necessary as crime usually happen in dark areas.
Places under the road bridge near the old balairaya of Kg Pengkalan Gate, has not night light at all and is a sure signal that it is not a safe area.
The nearby area is also very bushy especially area occupied by the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM). The trees and lalang are already overgrown! We don't need for another Ops Lalang!
This situation is another invitation for more crime. This is definately unwanted in this peaceful tradisional village.
As someone born and grow in this village, it is hopeful that the future generation will see more beneficial development for them in this Kampung Pengkalan Gate.
See you in the next post.
